Hypotheses: supercharge your ideas and improve your decision making
with Tom Adams
What is a good idea? More importantly, how can you tell the difference between good ideas and bad ones? How can you be confident you’re not wasting your or your clients’ time and money by designing and building work that has no return on investment, and little value to users?
In this hands-on session, Tom will teach you to structure your ideas using design hypotheses backed up with evidence and outcomes. He’ll talk about what makes a good hypothesis (and what makes a bad one), and he’ll discuss how hypotheses can help you understand which ideas have potential value, and which ones need more work. And he’ll talk about how hypotheses can be used as a powerful persuasion tool with clients, stakeholders and teams – particularly in helping you avoid the dreaded Hippos (highest paid person’s opinion).
About Tom
Tom Adams built his first website in 1997, using tables and framesets. In the two decades since, he has been a designer, Flash developer and frontend developer, before specialising in user experience design and then user research.
He is currently a User Research Lead for HM Revenue and Customs. He spent 6 years at award winning agency Code Computerlove, where he was Senior UX Consultant and later Head of Conversion Optimisation.
Tom has a habit of picking apart and trying to improve embedded working processes and received wisdoms, wherever he sees them. He likes to solve problems by asking lots of questions, which is great when he’s at work but really annoys his kids.
