Rethinking GEL for an internet first BBC

with Paul Crowley
Head of UX&D for myBBC, GEL, Homepage & Content Discovery at the BBC

GEL is the Global Experience Language developed by the BBC UX&D Team.

It’s a shared experience language and framework – used across all BBC digital services. Including principles, patterns, assets, standards and guidelines, GEL ensures that the entire UX&D Team is effectively creative, and able to innovate whilst delivering a consistent and familiar user experience.

However, the ‘Internet first BBC’ recently announced by Tony Hall (the BBC’s Director General) mean that the ambition and scope of GEL needs re-visiting.

Paul’s talk will focus on why and how the GEL framework needs to evolve, if consistency and creative expression can co-exist and more mysteriously, why the ratio 83:1 has been such a motivator.’
