Avoiding UX dystopia with "design fiction"

Rosie Campbell

Humans love stories, and it turns out they can help us understand UX. Known as "design fiction", this form of speculative design uses narrative elements to envision future technology and explore how we might use it.

In this talk, I’ll introduce the concept of design fiction, and look at some striking examples from pop culture. I’ll also examine some of the practical ways in which BBC R&D has made use of the technique, and the kind of UX lessons it can help us learn. As someone who is fascinated by the way technology shapes society, I believe tools like design fiction can make the difference between us creating a future we want to live in, or accidentally designing dystopia!
